Scoring Methodology
How the ManagerSignal
Score is calculated
The ManagerSignal Score is a research-backed composite metric derived from six weighted dimensions of manager effectiveness, collected anonymously from direct reports.
The Composite Formula
Each dimension average (1-5) is normalized to a 0-100 scale, then multiplied by its weight percentage. The sum of all weighted dimension scores equals the overall ManagerSignal Score.
× 20 converts the 1-5 scale to a 0-100 range. Minimum 3 reviews required for a published score.
Six Scoring Dimensions
Communication & Clarity
Measures how clearly a manager sets expectations, shares context, and keeps their team informed. High scores reflect transparent, frequent, and actionable communication.
Coaching & Development
Evaluates a manager's investment in their team's growth: mentoring, stretch assignments, career conversations, and creating learning opportunities.
Trust & Psychological Safety
Assesses whether team members feel safe to speak up, take risks, and admit mistakes without fear of retaliation or embarrassment.
Team Health & Support
Looks at how well a manager protects team wellbeing, manages workloads, resolves conflict, and creates a cohesive, supportive environment.
Execution & Decision Velocity
Tracks how effectively a manager removes blockers, makes timely decisions, and keeps their team moving toward outcomes without unnecessary friction.
Culture Impact & Values Alignment
Measures how well a manager embodies and reinforces the organization's values, shapes team culture, and leads with integrity.
Weight Distribution
Weights are calibrated based on organizational psychology research and validated against employee retention and engagement outcomes.
How a Score is Produced
Raw Ratings Collected
Reviewers rate each dimension on a 1-5 scale. All reviews are anonymous and validated for quality.
Dimension Score Calculated
Ratings across all reviewers are averaged per dimension. Outliers are flagged but not removed automatically.
Weighted Composite Score
Each dimension average is multiplied by its weight, then summed to produce the overall ManagerSignal Score (0-100).
Percentile Ranking
The composite score is compared against all managers in the platform to produce a percentile rank.
Trend & Cycle Tracking
Scores are tracked across review cycles to surface improvement, regression, or consistency over time.
